Donald Stephen Berthel, 91, La Motte, Iowa, passed away on February 12, 2019 at Mercy One in Dubuque.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 16th, 2019 at St. Joseph Church, Key West with Rev. Philip Mensah officiating and military honors to follow by the Bellevue American Legion Post #273. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Key West. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, La Motte, Iowa. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Donald was born August 26,1927 the son of Alexander and Bernice (Pollock) Berthel. He graduated from LaMotte Holy Rosary High School in 1946. He served in the US Army from 1950 to 1952 in the Korean War.
After returning from the Korean War he married Patricia Monner on October 26, 1954 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Bellevue, Iowa.
He was a member of the Bellevue American Legion post 273, La Motte/Key West Knights of Columbus, and an officer of the LaMotte Fire board.
Donald enjoyed farming, taking pride in raising black Angus cattle, fishing, hunting, playing horseshoes, gardening, and woodworking. But most of all, Donald cherished his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren; he was a stranger to no one.
Donald is survived by Patricia, his devoted wife of 64 years; his daughters, Diana (Mike) Bonifas, Linda Schuster (Mike Gehl), Marion (Robert) Theisen, and Marcia (Kevin) Ambrosy, one son Leonard (Jennifer) Berthel; son-in-law Ric Nemmers; two siblings Mary Lou Mottet and Algean Nemmers; Seventeen grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Denise Nemmers; his parents Alexander and Bernice Berthel; his sister Lyda Herrig; brothers-in-law, Merlin Herrig, George Mottet, and Virgil Nemmers; former son-in-law Fred Schuster.
The family wishes to thank the La Motte Fire and Rescue Department and Mercy One Emergency Room for all their care and compassion.
Elaine M. Flagel, 71, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday evening, February 12, 2019, at Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport, Iowa.
A celebration of Elaine's life will be held at 1:30 P.M., Monday, February 18, 2019, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the services from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Sutton Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.
Elaine Marie Hayward was born on November 17, 1947 in Dubuque, Iowa, to George and Darien (Scharff) Hayward. She started out at country school in Hurstville and then attended Maquoketa schools. She married Larry Allen Flagel on April 18, 1964 in Maquoketa, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 27, 2002.
Elaine had worked at Teledyne Metal in Maquoketa as a machinist for ten years, and later retired from Imagine The Possibilities as a direct support specialist.
Elaine was a great cook who liked working on puzzles, watching QVC and soap operas with "Days Of Our Lives" being her favorite. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to honor Elaine's memory include her daughters, Shannon (Nathan) Reid of Marquette, KS, and Sheri (Joey) Trivette of Maquoketa, IA; her mother, Darien Hayward of Dubuque, IA; 6 grandchildren, Cherity (Nathan) Indorf, Mercedes (Logan) Lucas, Branden Weis, Shelby Hardison, Alexis Hardison, Dakota Hardison; 4 great-grandchildren, Camry Lucas, Ryot Indorf, Audi Schwenn and Sawyer Lucas; brothers, Wade (Kathy) Hayward of Dubuque, IA, and Larry Hayward of Bolivar, MO; a sister, Karla Schramm of Dubuque, IA; and a sister-in-law, Janice Hayward of Dubuque, IA. She was preceded in death by her father, her husband, a brother Louis and a sister Susan.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, an Elaine M. Flagel memorial fund has been established.

Bonita "Bonnie" J. Roussel, 81, of Dubuque passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m., Friday, February 15 at Holy Spirit Parish-Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Bonnie was born on August 27, 1937 in Dubuque, the daughter of Herbert and Lorraine (Cushing) Becker.
She married Gerald "Jerry" Roussel on December 29, 1956 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
